427. "Get Back" (To Where You Once Belonged)

A few things have transpired since my previous post in late October and rather than let them fall to the wayside without personally documenting them here, the format of the blog will be tweaked just a bit to reflect these events and happenings, past, present and future.

While there are some good goodies up my sleeve that I will share in due time (let's say within the next two to three weeks), I want to share some recent things within the next post or two.

From time to time, future posts will initially feature an "inspiration post" (or what I like to call the 'appetizer'), leading up to the main course and a B-roll post of behind the scenes looks of the current subject at hand (dessert).

If you guessed the 5 sketches to start this post were past girlfriends, you were wrong. What you are looking at instead we're my inspiration and sketch ideas for "Fall Whites", masterfully brought to paper by none other than my cheeky friend, Christine Mitchell of N' East Style. As you can see, I initially had the idea of using more layers for all 5 looks but after some brainstorming and a change of scenery, decided against it for something more casual and home based, almost like documenting the day in the life of an artist.

425. "Fall Whites"

It's been over a month since Labor Day weekend. According to rules put in place a long time ago, by somebody who isn't around anymore, we're not supposed to be wearing white. Well, like I said, those rules are old and by now, outdated. So while you may be packing away your seersucker, I wouldn't say it's time to store your white jeans. Now's as good a time as any reevaluate your favorite pair and strive to make them seasonless. Mixing in traditional fall pieces like chunky sweaters, leather jackets and ponchos set the balance right.

424. His & Hers: Lara Speier ("Kind Of Blue")

Lara Speier is someone I've met through the blog well over a year ago, snapping her on three different occasions (exhibit A). One of the first things you'll quickly observe about her style is her penchant for all things menswear. It is easily more prominent than most girls I know. So much to the point that right after agreeing to join in on this project, she told me she "is always up for dressing like a half man". Not typical for someone who works in advertising and certainly not as extreme of a statement if you're as attractive as this native New Yorker is.

Fortunately, she didn't have to search far to mold her unique personal style. Lara credits her vintage friendly Mother for taking bold sartorial risks, much to her chagrin at the time, such as wearing an army green suede hooded jumpsuit to Parent/Teacher conference one year. It wasn't until a few years ago that she had a change of heart and began embracing these lessons Mom subconsciously taught the younger Lara. Mom's wardrobe started to find it's way into the closet of her style hungry daughter shortly after.

As for the self explanatory title of the post, it was pretty awesome to have her dressed up in three different shades of blue that wasn't soft tones (I promise you me coordinating her blues was a total coincidence. It's uniform these days).

423. The Explorer

In what began as a small but powerful rumble at the earth's core, a new movement captured the attention of the fashion industry. This trailblazing first wave of style bloggers has redefined the way we absorb culture, much like the British invasion nearly 50 years ago.

If I'm marking the timeline correctly, the domino effect started toward the end of 2009 with Twitter playing the catalyst. With each new tweet and blog post, relationships were being formed and some others further solidified. A following was created.

2010 marked the first chapter in a series of breakthroughs. "Sewn From The Soul" and "Black Ivy" were both a commercial success with appearances in GQ. Menswear label Run Of The Mill launched. Blogger Cons and roundtable discussions commenced. Before long, avenues that were once difficult to explore suddenly became within a shorter reach.

There is something to be said about a bunch of creative twenty (and several north of thirty) somethings being able to band together organically in this fashion. Our respective blogs were the platform from which to be seen and heard much sooner, demanding attention from the established editors, stylists, writers, photographers, you name it.

There are parallels between these first generation style bloggers and downtown New York during the late 1970's and early 80's Punk/New Wave/Early Hip Hop scene. Aspiring filmmakers, actors, musicians and artists alike claimed the desolate blocks below 14th street as their playground to creatively express themselves with barely any permits, budgets and just a dream.

In less than ten years, many household names sprouted out of that era: Basquiat, Glenn O'Brien, Fab 5 Freddy, Debby Harry, Russell Simmons, Steve Buscemi, Talking Heads, Patti Smith and countless other notable figures who not only had a significant impact on creative minds locally or stateside but globally.

The significant advantage we have in New York City today, versus circa 1981 is the ability to document our every move in real time via social media and advancing technology to further enable that. Having people from other states and countries actively watching and getting involved only drive that point home. Our 5 borough playground isn't as rough around the edges as it was 30 years ago but more than anything else, that downtown energy remains as prominent and addictive as ever.

In five to ten years from today, the world will look back on this sub culture as new and established household names and stars: Travis Gumbs and Joshua Kissi. William Yan, Lawrence Schlossman, Sean Sullivan, Adam Christopher, Nchimunya Wulf, Jake Davis, Ali, Justin Chung, Ouigi Theodore, Jessie Boykins, John Jannuzzi, Sean Quincy, Lala Lopez, Mikael Kennedy, James Wilson, Phillip Annaund, Antonio Ciongoli. I can go on for months.

Nothing short of monumental greatness is expected out of these names I just mentioned. The ones not mentioned who also have supporting roles in this movement, myself included and you the reader.

We hope to inspire others to take advantage of their talents, chase dreams, find like-minded individuals who are also forward thinkers and go to war together. This image before you represents exactly where we are at the present time: not quite where we want to be but still fighting our way to wherever our hopes and dreams dictate.

422. His & Hers: Lala Lopez

My oh my, how the tables have turned. Quite possibly my single favorite aspect of this series (aside from getting a preview of how the future Mrs. JFKJean would look in my kits) is placing Lala Lopez out from the production end of an image into the primary focus. Lala being the first native New Yorker profiled, spending part of her childhood between Long Island and Queens.

Stylist by day and journalist at night, she heads her eponymous blog, Lala New York City, the 3 year old blog (she started in the beginning of 2007 but didn't get the ball rolling until a year later) which places the spotlight on modern art, technology and of course, fashion. Along with that, a growing resume that includes writing contributions for Ozon and Blow magazines, Fashion Indie, Fashion's Collective and lending her hand in commercial work with brands from Betsey Johnson to Jeffrey Campbell.

Of the 5 'His & Her' girls thus far, Lala has the distinction of not being so boy crazy, sartorially speaking, displaying her affinity for full length skirts, rarely in flats, never not without a few accessories and her somewhat conservative style (imagine if you took a librarian, let her hair down, removed the thick framed glasses and became less introverted). All of these elements made it fun to dress her down, even in something simple, not to mention as versatile as the chambray shirt.

JFK: How long have you even styling for?

LaLo: I started assisting two stylists between 2007/2008, but never ever saw myself pursuing a career as a stylist. I was just really looking to learn more about fashion and it's processes. Then, a year after starting my blog, I wanted to make all the aspects that were found in print magazines available on the WWW through my blog as the platform. I was looking for a team to put together to do original fashion editorials that would appear on my blog. I had the whole creative team together but couldn't find a stylist. So, I figured why not give it a shot. After I styled the first editorial and got back the images, I couldn't believe how fulfilling it was to see the end result. And I guess, the rest is history.

JFK: I always tease you about getting accustomed to it but how did it feel to be in front as the main attraction as opposed to being behind the scenes?

LaLo: Haha, it's very strange to me, to be completely honest. I can get very anxious about being in front of the camera. I guess it's really because I'm just so accustomed to being the person behind the camera, making sure the finished product is well executed. So when roles reverse and I become the subject, it sometimes feels a bit out of place. But, hey, I'm getting better!

JFK: Your style relies a lot on a vintage aesthetic, obviously never bad in my book. Where, when and how did this come about for you?

LaLo: I always think that I was born in the wrong era. For me, it's all about a classic aesthetic: high necklines and long hems. When I moved to Manhattan out of high school, I didn't have many friends that lived in the same area. So, between classes or sometimes even during classes, I would roam around to all these great thrift and vintage stores in Hell's Kitchen and the East Village. I would spend hours talking to shop owners that would share the stories and history behind each piece of clothing they sold. Those conversations definitely influenced my style of dress. The way I see it, if your clothes don't tell a story, then what will?

JFK: Do you normally find yourself raiding the closet of your Father [or perhaps your Mother, whom I always imagine from the way you speak of her to be this fabulous, Bianca Jagger type]?

LaLo: Well, I can say that I've never seen my dad without a suit on a weekday. Everything is always perfectly tailored and clean. While, my mom is all about looking neat. Her color schemes are always well organized, much like the way she keeps her home. But, it's funny because although I've definitely taken cues from both my mother and father, I definitely march to the beat of my own drum. My mom never really understands the way I dress, she says I look like an old lady, haha.

JFK: As someone who's been a stylist for as long as you've been, what is the most important element(s) one should have if they had interest in pursuing this field?

LaLo: I'd have to say drive, POV and perseverance. There are hundreds of working stylists in just New York alone. Even though the competition is high, your talent and commitment to the craft will always shine through if you're hungry and maintain own personal aesthetic throughout all of your work. There have been times that have made me feel like it may never happen. But, I believe if you allow your passion to keep you going every single day, you will always win.

JFK: Last question, kind of random but very critical - "Takeover" or "Ether"?

LaLo: "You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song."

JFK: Wow *brain explodes everywhere*, nuff said.

420. His & Hers: Lauren Conrades

Lauren is one of my favorites, not only for looking absolutely stunning in one particular style (be it in fur or a white silk empire waisted Balenciaga dress for starters) or another but because of her consistency and the level of ease in which she can pull off any given garment you throw at her. Stealing her from Chicago and calling Brooklyn home for nearly a year, Lauren's biggest adjustment was making the transition from mostly heels to a flats based arsenal to handle the wear and tear these harsh New York streets tend to put on our kicks (and our feet, of course).

After the trial and error years of the 90's and early 00's (consider it the same for just about all of us, pretty depressing) consisting of borderline illegal thong revealing low rise jeans, flip flops and the sweet cherry on top, a midriff top to her graduation (I'll admit, is kind of hot and badass in a way but still, shame on you, woman), Lauren began to see the light and follow the right path when she enrolled into fashion school and found herself selling pieces from the likes of Alaia, Hermes and Chanel on ebay. In not so shocking news, the progression of her wardrobe soon followed suit (pun certainly intended).

Where does one start with a style maven of Kate Jones' caliber? Well here's a primer: she was an early inductee of Jake Davis' Test Shot series, big kahuna of the accessory label Ursa Major [the name of a boat she lived on, that took her from Antigua to Venezuela], along with features on sites ranging from New York Times' The Moment, Secret Forts, Fashionista, Refinery 29 and New York Mag's The Cut, just to name a few [let me not forget my ace Christine Mitchell of N'East Style and her interview with Kate just last month, before she beheads me].

In my humble but usually accurate opinion, all of what I just mentioned plays second fiddle to how sweet and humble she is. It tears up my heart like this one boyband, actually. One of many ingredients to her present [and forthcoming] success, if you ask me.

Most gals of the stylish bunch these days can walk the gender tight rope while maintaining their femininity but the more I sit and dwell on it, the more I come to terms that in a past life, Ms. Jones was at the forefront of this trend as we now know it. Considering her nautical background as well as her fondness for bold stripes and shorts, we both decided it would be fun to toy around with a dress and contrasting prints [we still somehow made Manhattan's West side look 5 minutes from a beach setting].

JFK: To start off, there are a popular set of images floating around my tumblr dashboard and a few well known menswear blogs. I'm talking about Chance. How did that come about?

KJ: Julia Leach who is one of the classiest, kindest, most generous, and nevermind talented women I know, started a lifestyle brand called Chance, after having been Creative Director of Kate Spade for years. She found a photo of me from the Sartorialist and had forwarded it as inspiration to Risa Mickenberg who was to direct a series of short films to go along with the launch of the line. Turns out Risa was a mutual friend of both of ours, and said "Hey, I know that girl, that's Kate!". Next thing you know, we're on Fisher's Island, running around in the woods and on the beach, having a blast, creating these films. Having grown up all over, but predominantly in Maine, Chance was right up my alley. I also created a 3 piece capsule collection for her which can be found at her pop-up shop this month and next on Elizabeth just below Prince. It looks like Steven Alan is going to carry it in East Hampton too.

JFK: Were you always this awesome and stylish? Tell me about young(er) Kate Jones, your early style influences, if it differs from your present day self.

KJ: Haha, was I always this awesome?! Shucks. I'd say no, but then again I was flipping through old photos from life on the boat last time I was home, and found a pic of me when I was about 8 wearing a little white vest over a chambray dress and a bandana in my hair. My mom and I had a good laugh...I'm still that girl. In college my nickname was 'J Crew Kate' - everyone always thought I'd looked like I'd stepped out a J Crew ad. I'd say I've never strayed much from my initial wardrobe or style influences. They were mostly from my upbringing and travels - and my mom...And never stopped lusting after the way Robert Redford or Lauren Hutton looked. But it's certainly become more sophisticated and interesting - as I started getting into lines like Martin Margiela, Maria Cornjeo, Dries Van Noten, and New Zealand label Zambesi after college. It helps to keep me from looking entirely like I've just stepped off of a boat. ;)

JFK: Where do you see your style evolving in the next few years? Do you have a vision of where it'll go or have recent likes/dislikes that could dictate it's direction?

KJ: I think I might add some more skirts and dresses in the next few years, they're gradually creeping more into my wardrobe. I've become more increasingly aware of my "Tomboy" style as more and more people point it out. Hey, I know I like to wear guys shirts non-stop, but I didn't realize it was such a surprise to see me in a dress. Hopefully I don't look too much like a boy when I'm not.

Ultimately I just try to stick to pieces that really call out to me- I'm a very very particular shopper. And anytime something (a look or a particular item) becomes too common, I stray away. Sometimes it's hard to remain classic and singular at the same time these days, when everyone is picking up on the same heritage/long-standing brands. It gets predictable so easily. So I just wear what feels right on me and what I think I'd still want to wear 5-10 years from now. I have expensive taste, so I'm not about to spend mucho dinero on something that I'm going to be over in a year or two. Trying to maintain a wardrobe of favorites. When everything is a favorite, everything feels good on.

JFK: As you are probably aware now, I'm a terrible fan of what you offer for the ladies. How long will you make other male admirers wait for a mens spinoff?

KJ: Alright alright, you guys have been asking for a while now, and you've been patient. And I promise to deliver a full men's line by September. But the good news is Steven Alan will be getting a small collection of men's rings in this summer..so have at it.

JFK: There are more men then ever [or probably since guitar bands ruled the world at this time 40 years ago] wearing jewelry and accessories in general. Are you particular about the details and how we wear them?

KJ: Generally, yes, but to each his own. My M.O. is pretty much "jewelry for men who don't wear jewelry". I mean, yes, if you're a guy and you already love having a piece of jewelry, or more, always on- then hey, I'm creating pieces that are simple enough they can be mixed with anything else. But more often than not, I come across men who say "You know I'd wear jewelry if I found something I really liked, it's just that I never have"- well they're my target guy. I'm gonna make you something simple, and masculine, yet totally unique and inconspicuous enough that you can live in it. You know, for all of the jewelry I wear, I rarely take any of it off. The idea of changing things constantly is more than I care to think about. The goal is to make pieces that are statements and staples.

416. His & Hers: Nchimunya Wulf

Primarily regarded as the unofficial official first lady of the Brooklyn Circus, Nchimunya [pronounced "chuh-moon-yuh", which is actually Danish for "5th born", as she was the last of 5 children] was raised in Denmark and traces her beginnings to Zambia. Never one to just blend in any crowd [note her wonderful signature hairstyle and slight resemblance to Eve], her aesthetic already fit the 'His + Hers' format well before she was contacted for the project. Nchimunya's day to day wardrobe relying on mens style oxfords shoes and shirts alike, as well as accessories like hats and beads to spice up voluminous skirts and her usually black heavy closet.

And what does one do when you love accessories that much? You start an accessory line. Beginning two years ago, [appropriately named "Fifth Born"] only designing exclusively for close friends and family, Ms. Wolf was heavily inspired after finally calling New York home earlier this year and began working under the wing of The Circus' most recognizable figure, Ouigi Theodore. That lead to a compelling feeling to research her African heritage, ergo expanding the line.

Look for the ethnic influenced unisex line to launch sooner than you can say "bloggers blogging about their favorite blogger's bloggers." For the time being, check her out on various parts of the Brooklyn Circus shop and Tumblr.

415. His & Hers: Cary Randolph

'His + Hers' is a concept intended to channel the ever growing trend of women tackling menswear by either wearing menswear inspired pieces or taking things a step further and raiding the closets of Father's, boyfriends, Husbands, etc., and wearing it as if it were their own garments.

From time to time, I will showcase a few special lady friends of mine with some pieces from my own closet. Some of the garments will be mixed in with their own and some head to toe in my threads, styled by yours truly.

Cary Randolph is someone whom I've only met recently but she's the first gal up to bat for this project. How you might ask? One part immaculate timing and another part due to her innate sense of style that is the quintessential American woman of the 80's and 90's (the stylish portions of those decades, at least), she once dubbed "Carolyn Bessette camp counselor chic". The Missouri born, New York City girl at heart is the perfect first for this project as she's a master of bending and breaking age old style "rules", relying on the essential pieces of her youth, whilst making it modern and still embracing new trends and ideals.

JFK: Describe the origins and inspiration behind Fresh Every Day?

CR: I started Fresh Every Day (FrED for short) in late 2007 as a place to put everything that inspired me. Back then it was called “26.style” – a reference to my love of running marathons and, of course, fashion. As my taste matured, so did the blog, and it evolved to reflect most prominently the American ideals and lifestyle to which I aspire. I'm thinking primarily of New England beaches and Manhattan city life, and the influence of our nation's history on fashion – for both women and men. FrED is about American living – appreciating and paying homage to our legendary past without sacrificing innovations of today.

JFK: Who or what inspires your personal style?

CR: My personal style is inspired most by the men in my life: father, grandfathers, my uncle Marc –all Wasps of the old school prep variety when “preppy” was neither ironic nor fashionable but simply a way of life; designers Bill Blass, Halston, Ralph Lauren; Eighties literary greats Tom Wolfe, Jay McInerney, and Bret Easton Ellis. Then there are the blondes: Candice Bergen, Christie Brinkley, Mary Randolph Carter, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Gwyneth Paltrow. Some brunette favorites include my mother, of course, Jacqueline and Lee Bouvier, Ali McGraw, Lilly Pulitzer. Places greatly inspire me: Newport, Rhode Island; the Frick Museum, New York in the early 1980s; Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the Virginia Tidewater, the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. My personal style is a like a survey of American history.

JFK: 3-5 items you carry daily that you won't be caught dead without.

CR: If I'm not wearing it, I still carry my grandmother's silver I.D. bracelet everywhere I go. It has her name CARY RANDOLPH engraved on top and on the other side, LOVE, JACK – it was a gift from her brother, my great-uncle. He was in the Navy at Norfolk, Virginia, and just larger than life. I also always wear a watch – either my Timex military or a stainless steel Tag Heuer, a high school graduation gift from my father. I always carry a red lipstick – it can take any look from day to night with a single flick of the wrist. The iPhone 4 is practically glued to my hand; I take that thing everywhere I go (sometimes to my detriment). Lastly, although this isn't really one thing, I always stash a pair of flats in my bag. Heels slow me down, and even – no, especially – at night, I need to move fast. Right now I'm never without my blaze orange leather J.Crew ballet flat. You'd think orange wouldn't be versatile, but it works with everything in my closet.

JFK: Style quirks?

CR: My friends give me hell for always wearing variations of the same beachy, summery style, even in the depth of winter. I definitely try to evoke warmer months and places through what I wear, and for that reason alone my wardrobe is mostly seasonless. White denim year-round and bright plaid or printed button-downs (by Gitman Brothers, J.Crew, and Wharf) are the standard. And while it's fun to dress up in evening finery and experiment with trends, I am essentially a jeans-and-tee girl. Think of Cindy Crawford in the Diet Pepsi Eastern seaboard roots with my Midwestern upbringing. This half country, half country club mish-mash creates all sorts of style quirks.

JFK: ....And your past style mishaps?

CR: My biggest mishap, always, is succumbing to the siren song of flash-in-the-pan fads. Yes, it's important to take sartorial risks, but too often I ignore my better judgment and end up miserable at the party (or, worse, in party pictures) because my clothes are all wrong. Bubble skirts, gladiator sandals – I've tried it all. For example a couple years ago I bought everything two or three sizes too big. Boyfriend jeans, extra-large tux shirts – I was drowning in layers. Then I thought I was a dime, but in hindsight, I just looked, well, oversized. Better to find a uniform – shape, palette, fit – and work around its variations. You rarely see Tom Ford in anything but a tuxedo, and there‟s a reason for that.

Last weekend was a coming out party of sorts. I got to style an event (my first major, btw) called 'Wedding Crashers' which is an annual expo taking place at the Green Building, showcasing wedding themed dresses and suits. I outfitted the boys, who we're kitted out in Ovadia & Sons and the accessories, courtesy of Graham Withers and Fine And Dandy Shop and some from my own personal stash.

Naturally, the days and moments leading up to Sunday, I had a few butterflies playing about in my belly but I think it was 98% excitement and the objective was to make my guys look as splendid as possible (oh, and to promote Classe By JFKJean ;) which I feel was a success on both parts.

Ladies and Gents, if you follow this blog, Tumblr or the Twitter feed, etc., it's no secret that I'm an advocate of personal style. When you reside in a city like New York, it really isn't difficult to find inspiration through fellow residents (even if its a small percentage of said residents, but I digress), which was part of the reason for this blog's existence, starting two years ago. All things considered, we live in a far more casual society than we did 40 years ago and in a way, I always felt obligated to use the knowledge I've picked up along the way and share it with whoever was willing to listen, be it finding the right look for a night out on the town or totally revamping their wardrobe and moving in a more sophisticated direction.

Personal style is a reflection of one's personality, mood at that particular time or even their state of mind. It's a way of communicating without actually having to speak, verbally. Whether your comfort relies on a business based attire, t-shirt and denim combo or anything in between, it's important that you marry the two worlds of comfort and presentation. It says a lot to me personally if you ask Americans today who influences their personal style or who they consider to be iconic, I noticed more attention is paid to non Americans, past or present or Americans from past eras.

Which brings me to 'Classe By JFKJean'. My only aspiration is that it will carve a niche and have a long term effect on those who come across and decide to use this service.

I mentioned on twitter recently about my love for the Asian aesthetic and this shot was what helped sparked that thought. There was a Japanese based street style blog I used to frequent early last year (I forgot the URL to it after I lost my modBook 1.0. Anyone that can tip me off, I would really love that), that was never short on the style variety. You could spot tons of the same pieces, but they were rarely used the same way twice. No one plays with proportions and stretches the gender bending rules better than our friends on the far East coast. Seeing looks like this especially always puts me in a mood of wanting to visit Asia and just soak in their culture (which is ironic because you can see the inspiration and different variations of American style and pop culture, old and new.), find new influences and broadening your tastes. This is what style is all about.

Born Janelle Monae Robinson on December 1, 1985, she was originally born in Kansas City, Kansas and spent part of her childhood in New York City (studying theater) then onto Atlanta, Georgia.

She's quickly making a name for herself, on and off the stage. She dedicates her monochromatic wardrobe partially to blue collar citizens and mostly to her family back in Kansas City, Missouri who wore this as a uniform, day in and day out. As far as her music is concerned, she's electrifying, which is perfect because it matches her bubbly personality and badass, James Brown like stage presence. Now let me make it clear that I've yet to see her live and my only visual representation is through televised performances, like her magnificent 4 and a half minutes on "The Late Show With Dave Letterman" a few short months ago.

Listening to her breakthrough, "The ArchAndroid", you can't help but to hear sprinkles of Andre 3000's spectacular "The Love Below", "Sign Of The Times" era Prince and 'Ziggy Stardust' era Bowie. Filled with so much funk and it's such a fun listen, you'd have no pulse if you didn't enjoy it. She's a throwback to artists that had performance based songs and can actually perform to them too.

Music happens in cycles and I strongly felt within the last year or so, with the music landscape changing strategies and adapting to new formats even further, there's still hope at the end of the tunnel. Also most executives are afraid to experiment, especially with new talent, but there are a small circle of artists pushing that envelope regardless, keeping music fun and fresh. Janelle Monae is easily in that class.

I went from post number 1 to 300 in 9 short months then made a dramatic shift to slow down and over the course of the following 12 months, came the next batch of 100 posts, focusing more on quality photos and posts instead. I have tons of little style quirks. Many that interchange daily as my favorite like I change my socks, but this here detail melts my heart anytime I see it, which isn't often. I came across this woman (who had a military style jacket on, btw *my heart melting some more*) and obviously felt an obligation to document this detail. A couple of days after returning from Los Angeles, I had the great pleasure of working with an awesome filmmaker, Jake Davis for his popular 'Test Shot' series. For those not familiar with his work, he directed videos for the likes of Drake and Snoop Dogg, among many other artists, as well as great people I know and admire who have done test shots before me (blog pals Street Etiquette, Jeremy Kirkland and James Wilson, Esquire Editor Josh Peskowitz, and Schott Creative Director Sir Greg Chapman).

We shot this at an alley on Extra Place, just a few hundred yards from where CBGB once stood (that always passes through my mind when I'm in that area) and there's a little visual tribute to punk (although I left my Ramones pin at home).

Enough has been said about Kanye West over the years...so one more little editorial wouldn't hurt, no? I've been inspired by his sartorial choices as of late....and I don't write this from a biased point of view, because I'm an obvious fan of his but more of a fan of personal style, you can't help but to acknowledge his recent change of pace. Since Mr. West broke through the mainstream bubble back in early 2004, he's always stood out against his fellow contemporaries and as the years passed and his personal and artistic tastes progressed, Kanye has seperated himself from the pack and more so in the last month.

This all came to a head last weekend when he appeared at the MTV VMA's, sporting an electric red suit with multiple chains, channeling a "Raw" era Eddie Murphy and a more subtle Mr. T back in their respective peaks. The following two days, making a cameo appearance at Eminem and Jay-Z's "Home and Home" concert series, he showed up in red again, this time leather being the choice fabric, including one of those days with a leopard top underneath.

While most may frown upon these looks and consider this an easy target practice, I appreciate it, considering not many artists are capable of taking risks like he and Lady Gaga are (see: "Meat Dress") and with that excitement they collectively bring to the struggling music business, this reason more than anything else is why they are both the best out right now, but I digress.

You have to appreciate the small details. Case in point, those two little pedals sitting on Quentin's chest here, takes an already pretty good looking outfit and raises it to another level. I initially came across the first pair (the worn out ones, of course) of these Levi's back in September 2008. Little did I know the adventure before us in the coming 20 months. Muddy music festivals, pilgrimages to Haiti, tears from a stolen notebook and many miles on a blue bicycle, these jeans tell just as good of a story as those aforementioned events. I recall the very first time trying the pair on and feeling like they were the best pair of pants I've ever placed around the lower half of my body. My dumbest move in this process was not buying a spare pair. Funny how a simple pair of pants can have that kind of affect on you. With certain looks, I felt like a 70's English musician sex icon, while other days I felt like the North East prepster I've always been at heart.

Finally in the last couple of months after blowing out the crotch (third photo, after the repair), I decided it's days we're numbered and that I should hunt down another pair. Fast forward about 6 weeks, I found another on ebay for $32 (with shipping) and regained that feeling I felt nearly two years ago when I tried them on for the first time. You'd think I would be content with a brand new pair of the exact model I've come to love but I'm still searching ebay for another pair to help close out the rest of my twenties.

One of many different variations of the sailor stripes that was out and about in the city yesterday (including a metallic epaulet!). This was obviously my favorite of them all and they key to the look is all in the vertical stripes. Instead of adding width, her lower half looks long and lean (more like a tall glass of water). I'll need more ladies (especially if you are on the shorter end and want the added length without supplements) to take note. If yesterday was any indication, there will be plenty of stripes to come in the next 90 days or so.

Continuing the trend of women taking on menswear, she sports a mens shirt from J. Crew and with a little push of the sleeves and the addition of the necklace, it instantly becomes a womanly blouse. Sometime around 3pm Friday afternoon in the middle of this storm, I came to realise that I don't think I've enjoyed a snowstorm until that day and New York City looked as beautiful and radiant as it ever did, counting the classic autumn or spring days that's so appealing in New York. From there I decided to take the 15 minute trip from Mod HQ to the second biggest park in New York and noticed one of the greatest sights I've ever seen in my life: Parents with their children, acting like....well children.

Last but certainly not least is someone widely known as the hardest working man in show business. This basically means if you've been a fond of any entertainer in the music business over the last 40 years (Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Madonna to name a few), they are in James Brown's family tree. And he's obviously the Patriarch. No questions asked.

And if you like me was raised on 80's and 90's hip hop, James Brown alone was a crucial element to the movement, as he was the go-to artist for producers who wanted to incorporate soul and funk to the young genre. The rappers themselves did more than a decent job of introducing a new generation of fans to the James Brown catalogue, all the while maintaining his popularity on the pop music landscape.

Sadly, we lost him on Christmas day of 2006 but his legacy continues to live on through his fans, old, new and even those that aren't his fans as of yet.

"Sewn From the Soul is an online editorial project brought to light by seven friends who have all collaborated together in order to see a bigger picture; ultimately meshing and intertwining Style and History. History is important as it gives us the ability to trace back what has occurred previously to help us better direct ourselves to the future. Style contributes to one’s overall character and truly dictates our persona in everything that surrounds us. We all contributed our individual style to this editorial and used a primarily monochromatic palette to assist the Black History Month theme."

As stated in the above quote, 'Sewn From The Soul' was a small homage to Black History Month, spearheaded by Joshua Kissi of Street Etiquette and James Field of Black Nouveau.

Truly and easily one of the single most important events of my young 26 years, when Joshua rang me up early last month, proposing this project, he really didn't have to say much to get me on board. It wasn't until the days leading up to and during the shoot that I realised how important and influential this project could potentially turn out. Already 4 days after it's release and to see it celebrated by the likes of GQ, Refinery 29, and a modestly known rapper named Common, only shows that Black History Month still matters, especially to our very young generation.

Finally, I simply cannot give enough credit to the man who shot this, Alejandro Perez. People will recognise your talent and I may wish upon you a swarm of email, texts, phone calls (even tweets!) from companies awaiting your services.

Right before this blistering winter hit, I told myself by late October, early November would be the last I would see New Yorkers peddling their respective bicycles until Spring. Well it's nearing mid January and even when it gets warm enough to, I still bring mine out with extra layers. This either means we're a bit mad to do such a thing or maybe bicycling can be a year round activity, even when it's about 30 outside.....and we better be looking good whilst doing it.

329. Man of Sartorial Excellence: Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko .... in "Wall Street"

"Greed for lack of a better word....is good" was the famous phrase Gordon Gekko uttered....which seemed to sum up the film, his wardrobe throughout the 120+ minutes and also of the powerful Wall Street executive in the excess of the 1980's. His personality was aggressive and his wardrobe did the job of reflecting his high ranking position, taking style nods from Europe and making it American, all the while easily making banker shirts and suspenders cool and chic.

NBA coach Pat Riley certainly took notes from this film and felt the Gekko effect. In the late 1980's and early 90's, slicked back hair, fine Italian suits courtesy of Gianni Versace set a new standard, similar to how Tom Landry and most American Football coaches pre 1970's donned their best threads on the sidelines.

Michael Douglas is reviving the Gekko character for the sequel "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps", and even 22 years later, my money goes against him losing his stylish and detailed step.
